Harrogate to Ripley  Bridleway/Cycleway/Off-road route Creation Scheme

The Bilton/Ripley scheme to create a bridleway/cycleway/off-road route largely following the disused railway line between Bilton, running over the Bilton viaduct, to Ripley is to receive major lottery funding as part of Sustrans' Connect2 bid.

Harrogate Bridleways Association has pledged £1,000 towards the cost of this scheme, and further contributions from individuals or groups are welcomed.

Who are we?

We are a voluntary organization, affiliated to the British Horse Society, and covering 332 parishes within North Yorkshire, although we have members outside the area too.  The organization has an elected committee and our aim is to keep open the present bridleways network, and to search out and restore old routes.  We raise funds to do this by organizing pleasure rides, and holding fundraising events.

Our pleasure rides are non-competitive and open to everyone.  We ask that everyone rides with consideration for the land and for others.  A rosette is given on completion of the ride.  Members have a tally card to record distances covered, and at certain mileages special rosettes are presented.

HBA works with the British Horse Society and the local Councils.  We investigate complaints from members and try to resolve these with the Councils and local landowners.  We attend planning meetings, where bridleways are involved, to ensure that horse riders have their say in local affairs.

HBA has conducted surveys of local bridleways and undertaken horse head counts to assist in persuading Councils to involve local riders.

HBA and its members also undertake physical clearance of shrubbery, trees etc and install signs and way markers.

We need off-road routes to avoid the danger of riding on roads.  Being a member of a bridleway group supports this work and helps to ensure rights of way remain open and freely available for use and for generations to come.
